Reef-Safe Non-Toxic Sunscreens
Our ocean may be vast but it also delicate. With the rising concern of the health of our world’s oceans, we wanted to provide a place to find products that will protect you from the sun and not harm the ecosystems at sea. There are plenty of products on the market that contain naturally occurring elements to protect you and your family from the harmful solar rays.
With the Earth’s population at 8.2 billion you can expect that millions of people every day are applying sunscreen for work and leisure activities. The majority of sunblock available is full of harmful chemicals and additives. That is millions of people’s applied layers of sunscreen washing off into our rivers, lakes and oceans each day.
These chemical-based sun blocks also cause major damage to our skin over time. The most harmful ones being Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, parabens and nanoparticles are also common ingredients that should be avoided at all costs. These chemicals can easily be absorbed through the outer layer of skin and into the blood stream and lymphatic system causing health problems for you and your loved ones. The skin is the largest organ as part of the human body and should be treated with love and respect! Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are the only safe and acceptable active ingredients that a sunscreen should contain, along with natural inactive ingredients as binders and stabilizers.
With the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) being slow to act on deeming these chemicals toxic to our bodies and our ecosystem, we must as a society gain knowledge of which products are safer alternatives.
